Brenna and Sadie took time out of their day to make rice krispie treats for our 5th grade students when they came over to visit our middle school and visited some 6th grade classes. Summer Reading Program for PreK-12 (and adults)! We were lucky to have Taelor Donnolly from the New London Public Library come in to talk about the summer reading program. Sign ups are at the library next week, and there are all types of prizes available from the school, from the community, and from the library. Reading logs are due back to the library on July 31. New London Community School District This is a reminder for parents of upcoming 7th and 12th graders of the current Iowa immunization requirements. The current Iowa Immunization Law requires all students entering, advancing or transferring into 7th grade provide proof of one dose of meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MenACWY) and a Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis/whooping cough) booster. All students entering, advancing, or transferring into 12th grade will need to pro...vide proof of two doses of the meningococcal (A, C W, Y) vaccine (or 1 dose if received when the applicant was 16 years of age or older). The meningitis vaccine protects against meningococcal serogroups A, C, W, and Y. Meningococcal disease is caused by bacteria that can infect the blood, brain, and spinal cord. Meningococcal bacteria are spread through upper respiratory droplets, such as saliva and can easily spread in crowded settings. Please be sure your child is up to date on all immunizations prior to the start of the 2021-2022 school year. All students entering 7th & 12th grade must have proof of the above vaccine requirements before school starts in August, unless the student has a Certificate of Immunization Exemption. For further information, you may visit http://www.idph.iowa.gov/immtb/immunization/laws. Your student may see their primary care provider or go to Henry County Public Health Clinic to receive the needed vaccines. Henry County Public Health has a walk-in clinic every Wednesday from 9-11AM and 1-4PM, with the last Wednesday of every month staying open until 6PM. Mrs. Denney's Physics: Electricity, Magnetism and More class took a different view of optics thanks to an informative visit to McPheron Optometry on Main Street. Dr. Robert McPheron and Dr. Grant McPheron explained various eye problems, demonstrated and explained some diagnostic equipment, and answered a variety of student questions. On Friday the IDPH provided an update to all schools across Iowa. Below you will find a few paragraphs with the guidance that they provide and can be immediately implemented. We are concurrently revising our COVID-19 guidance for school and child care settings, including quarantine guidance, to recommend that while COVID-19 positive and symptomatic children should be excluded, exposed children should no longer be required to stay home, regardless of mask usage. Moreover, w...hen there is a positive case, parents should be given information around exposure to COVID-19 in order to make their own informed decisions regarding risk. To that end, while we acknowledge that some parents may want their child to continue to wear a cloth face covering for reasons that make sense for their family or that child's individual health condition, we urge schools and child care settings to provide parents and students with the option to make their own decision about mask usage. Effective tomorrow Monday, May 17th the district will only recommend face coverings during the school day and at any event scheduled to take place at the school for all students, staff, and visitors.
