At 11:43 A.M., Monday, February 8, 2021, The Ottumwa Fire Department was paged to the report of a structure fire located at 950 S. Webster St. The first arrivin...g fire engine responding from Fire Station 2 with 3 personnel arrived four minutes after the call to find a small single family wood framed structure with a minor amount of smoke showing. Firefighters entered the structure to search for victims and the fire. A second fire engine responding from Station 1 with 3 personnel along with the Chief and Deputy Chief arrived about two minutes later. The fire was located in the basement of the structure and was quickly extinguished. Firefighters searched for fire extension and picked up tools and hose quickly due to the extreme cold temperatures. Damage to the structure includes flame, smoke, heat and water damage and is estimated at $15,000. The cause of the fire was a propane heater in the basement located too close to combustibles which ignited and spread. The Ottumwa Fire Department would like to remind everyone to always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations when using space heaters and to always give space heaters plenty of space when operating them. The Ottumwa Fire Department was assisted by the Ottumwa Police Dept., ORMICS, City of Ottumwa Public Works, Building Inspection and Ottumwa Police Dept. Communications.
